The Basics You Need To Know Of How To Clean A Dri-Tec Mattress Protector

Dri-Tec is a popular choice for sleepers who want a mattress protector that looks good, feels good and protects them and their mattress. Taking care of a Dri-Tec mattress protector is easy once you know how. Do not worry, the learning curve is quick and easy! But when the item is washed and dried in the wrong way, then it can, unfortunately, suffer a lot of damage. Its lifespan will also be much shorter.

Here are the basic steps:

  1. Clean the mattress protector beforehand.
  2. Wash the mattress protector with mild detergent and cold water.
  3. Dry the mattress protector with low heat in a tumble dryer or air-dry the item.

Why Must I Clean My Dri-Tec Mattress Protector Beforehand?

vacuum cleaner preclean

Experts recommend that all laundry should receive pre-treatment. But in this case, it will help to remove stains more thoroughly, give the fabric a clean look and a fresh smell. It will be well worth your while to take this extra step. That being said, it is not absolutely necessary but we recommend that you pre-clean. As you will soon see, pre-cleaning your Dri-Tec mattress protector is not hard at all!

You can do a couple or all of the suggestions below.

  • Remove the mattress protector from the bed and shake it outside to dislodge dust and dirt.
  • Brush it to remove debris from crevices.
  • Spot-treat stains.

How Do I Spot Treat Stains On My Mattress Protector?

Unfortunately, mattress protectors are prone to stains. It is kind of in their job description to protect the mattress against such things. Stains can include vomit, blood, sweat, urine, and even tea spills. The good news is that the following home remedy will take care of most stains (or at least remove most of the stain so that the washing machine can easily remove the entire stain later on).

Step 1: Get together a box of baking soda, water, a damp cloth, a saucer, and a teaspoon.

Step 2: Using the teaspoon, scoop some baking soda onto the saucer.

Step 3: Add just enough water to the baking soda to form a paste. If it becomes too runny, add more baking soda.

Step 4: Take the spoon again and scoop up some of the paste.

Step 5: Shake the paste off on top of the stain.

Step 6: Turn the spoon over and using the back, smear the paste over the stain.

Step 7: Leave the baking soda paste on the stain for anything from 30 minutes to an hour.

Step 8: When the time is over, take a damp cloth and carefully remove the baking soda. Take care not to rub the stain too hard. In some cases, as with blood, any rubbing actually makes the stain more difficult to remove.

Step 9: If you want to wash the item the next day, allow the mattress protector to air dry. Otherwise, pop it into the washing machine directly after you are done spot-treating all the stains.

How To Correctly Wash Your Dri-Tec Mattress Protector

gentle detergent

Step 1: Choose a gentle detergent. Stay away from bleach, chlorine and both strong laundry detergents and fabric softeners. These can all damage your protector.

Step 2: Choose your machine settings – the water must be cold and the cycle gentle. A hot cycle could ruin any waterproof ability your mattress protector has.

Step 3: Do not place other items of laundry inside with your protector if the item has a zippered edge. It might catch on fabric and damage both the other laundry and itself.

How To Correctly Dry Your Mattress Protector

You can dry your Dri-Tec mattress protector in two ways – using a tumble dryer or the washing line. If you prefer the tumble dryer, then you need to be on your toes. A tumble dryer can damage a mattress protector beyond repair within moments. That is why air-drying is highly recommended for any mattress protector. Tumble drying is an option if you need to quickly dry the protector – say, because an accident happened late at night but you need the protector for the bed that night.

How Do I Tumble Dry My Mattress Protector?

Step 1: Choose the lowest heat setting that is available.

Step 2: Make sure that you stick around. If you leave the mattress protector inside the tumble dryer after the cycle is finished, the hot metal of the drum will melt any plastic or waterproof areas that are resting against the drum.

Step 3: As soon as the cycle ends, remove the mattress protector without delay.

How Do I Air-Dry My Mattress Protector?

This is the safest way to dry any mattress protector. The best way is to use the laundry line outside. The sunshine and wind will dry your protector in no time and cause no damage.

You can also air-dry the item indoors. Simply place it on a waterproof surface (like a garden table or countertop) and turn on a few fans. If you have a ceiling fan, try to arrange the protector underneath it on a table. Keep in mind that when you dry any fabric indoors, you need to check on it periodically to wipe the moisture away from the waterproof surface and to adjust the fans to blow on the areas that need it the most.

How Often Should I Wash My Dri-Tec Mattress Protector?

Let’s say that there are no spills or accidents that require immediate attention. When all goes well, you really do not need to wash your protector every day. Once a month should keep the fabric clean and stain-free.
